Ephesus Ancient City, one of the most important ancient cities in the world, is located in Selçuk, the beautiful town in the south of İzmir. Its history dates back to 7000 BC. Ephesus, one of the most important centers of the ancient period, has been inhabited for approximately 9,000 years, starting from the prehistoric period, throughout the Hellenistic, Roman, Eastern Roman, Principalities and Ottoman periods. This place has been a very important port city, cultural and commercial center at all stages of its history.
The 8 km wide area in which Ephesus is located exhibits Prehistoric, Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Aydınoğulları and Ottoman period ruins. However, Ephesus reached its peak during the Roman period, when it was the most densely populated. As the capital of the rich province of Asia Minor, it became one of the mega cities of the Roman Empire. It was the first and largest metropolis of Asia Minor.
