Istanbul Bosphorus Mansions

Mansion means a large, magnificent house built on the shore. The structures built along the coast on the European and Anatolian sides of the Istanbul Bosphorus are known as Bosphorus Mansions. Bosphorus Coastal Houses are also called Bosphorus Coastal Palaces. Mansions, which began to be built after the 17th century during the Ottoman period, have been distinguished examples of Bosphorus architecture. They are mostly mansion and pavilion style structures with many rooms and sections, large gardens or groves, suitable for the architectural style of the period considering the humidity, generally built with masonry, wood, and lath technique, with an architecture and magnificent appearance that includes Ottoman culture, adorned with hand-drawn decorations, and boathouses, located at a distance from the sea (leb-i derya). In mansions, the harem-selam sections were either implemented as separate buildings, or separated from the middle, or as the lower floor for the selamlık and the upper floor for the harem. The structures that were used as summer houses by palaces, dynasties and administrators in the early periods they were built, were used as embassies and permanent residences as tradesmen began to settle and the city grew over time. Over time, the old waterside residences were restored. Those that were destroyed for various reasons were reconstructed and renewed with projects, surveys and restitution works. Some of the structures have completely disappeared, while there are also apartments built with reinforced concrete instead.
