Located in the Zeyrek district of Fatih, the Çinili Hamam is one of the most important examples of Ottoman Hamam architecture. Commissioned by the Admiral Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha to Mimar Sinan between 1540 and 1546, the structure is among the artist’s earliest known hamams. The distinctive blue-and-white İznik tiles covering the walls of the hamam were destroyed by earthquakes and fires in the region in the 18th century and were sold by a Parisian antique dealer, taking their place in the collections of Europe’s most important museums. Some of these tiles can still be seen in the men’s section of the hamam.
Following meticulous restoration work that has been ongoing since 2010, the venue will be operational as a museum-hamam complex in 2023. Biennial viewers will have the opportunity to see the hamam sections of the venue before it regains its original function with women’s and men’s sections, almost 500 years after it first opened.
