The Million Stone

The Million Stone is a stone found very close to the entrance of the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul. This stone, which many people have passed by without noticing until today, has a historical feature. It was erected by Roman Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century. It is the starting point of the Ancient Roman roads reaching Istanbul and the zero point used in calculating the distances of other cities in the world to Istanbul. The Million Stone was made in the shape of a tetrapylon, an important style in Roman culture. Although there were reliefs and sculptures on the dome when it was built, some of the historical stone was destroyed over time.
