The Valens Aqueduc

The Valens Aqueduct is a unique structure located in the heart of Istanbul and keeps history alive. It was built 1600 years ago to carry water to Constantinople, the center of the Eastern Roman Empire. The aqueduct, whose construction began during the reign of Emperor Constantius II, was completed during the reign of Emperor Valens.

The Valens Aqueduct has seen not only the Romans, but also the Byzantines and then the Ottomans, and has managed to survive to the present day with the maintenance and repairs of these civilizations. The Ottomans not only preserved the arch, but also made improvements to increase its functionality.

Today, the Valens Aqueduct continues its existence as a silent witness to the past, but offers an image intertwined with modern life. A road passing under the arches reveals how history and the present exist side by side in Istanbul. It is truly impressive that this structure, designed for a simple function such as carrying water, has survived for centuries and has now become a city symbol. The Valens Aqueduct acts as a bridge between the past and the present.
